Harris Burdick Mysteries: Another place, Another Time

Hey, other bloggers.
this is what I have been working on in class. it is a paragraph that I wrote from this picture.

As Atticus, Billy, Archie and Elizabeth were trying to Catch up to the train because they had mist it. the tracks stretched like a snake. a storm was about to hit them, Then lighting struck like a bullet but it hit the ocean . That was so close said Atticus anxiously, Come on lets, keep going Said Billy and so the went. They couldn’t see anything in the thick gloomy fog. Then Elizabeth pointed out in the fog “there’s the train!” But when they saw the train it was on its side in the ocean. So they went on to see there grand-parents but then they saw sharks hurtling towards them.

Kindness can Change the World

Homelessness is when someone is unable to find a permanent home of their own to live in. There are different reasons why a person becomes homeless, but no one chooses to be homeless. Homelessness is everyone’s problem. Just because it may not be someone we know doesn’t mean we should ignore them. They are people in our community. If we can help we should help. If everyone did their part we could end homelessness. We just have to care enough.

Here are a few facts about homelessness that stand out for me. I think we need to understand these better to know how we can help.

  • 57% of people who are homeless are women.
    • Women who are victims of domestic violence have to escape quickly and can’t always take much with them. They might not have money to afford a place to live or food. They could be scared or hurt. We need to make sure they have places to go to that can help them get away from their situation.
    • Single moms might not have enough money to pay for daycare as well rent, food and bills. Daycare can be really expensive so it can be hard to afford it but without daycare they might not be able to work. I think there should be affordable daycare for people in poverty so it doesn’t lead to homelessness or people having to surrender their children because they can’t afford shelter.
  • 42% of people who are homeless come from an Indigenous background.
    • Generations of Indigenous people have been affected by residential schools and laws that took away their rights. This still affects people today even though many of our laws are better. There is still a lot that needs to be better. I think we need to make sure Canadians understand how Indigenous people in Canada have been treated. Every Canadian needs to learn the parts of history that have not been taught until now. Generations of non-Indigenous people were taught that Indigenous people didn’t matter and at the same time Indigenous people were taught that they didn’t matter. There’s still lots of discrimination out there towards Indigenous people because that’s what society taught even if they didn’t realize that. We need to listen and learn.
  • 13% of people are homeless because of illnesses.
    • This surprised me because I always thought you didn’t have to pay for medical care in Canada. I understand why people in the United States become homeless because it costs so much to see a doctor or be in a hospital. Are the illnesses that lead to homelessness mostly mental illnesses? Do people have to pay money here for some kinds of sickness or surgery here too? I don’t think there are enough services and help for people with mental illnesses. If people are sick in Canada they should be able to get the medical care they need.

This is a comic about homelessness that I did in class. I believe that people who are homeless deserve to be seen and not ignored. It shows you care. We can’t forget they are people too. We can’t assume we know their story. This won’t solve homelessness, but maybe if we have more compassion more people will want to help make it better.

Kindness can change the World.

Let’s talk, Santa!

Dear Santa,

How are you and Mrs. Claus? Are Rudolph and your reindeer ready to pull the sleigh? It’s probably pretty busy up there at the North Pole so I thought I’d write you a letter to save some time. I know at Christmas most people make lists for what they would like you to bring them. Well this isn’t one of them. This is a list all about what I DON’T want for Christmas. Yes, you heard me correctly, Santa. Please DO NOT bring me these gifts. I really am grateful for the presents I get from you, but you want me to like them, right?

  1. FESTIVE FRIENDS – Have you tried these? They’re disgusting. Cadbury totally tricked me into buying them thanks to the cute Christmas pictures on the box and what looks like delicious cookies. I hope they didn’t trick you too. Let me save you some trouble, Santa. Don’t ever buy them. No one will want these as a gift.
  2. BEARD-GUARD – Once you brought my dad a beard-guard. I think you were trying to be funny because lots of stuff gets stuck in my dad’s beard. I know it’s going to be a long time before I grow a beard, but please don’t ever think I want one of these. They’re really weird.
  3. UNDERWEAR – I know it’s a useful gift, but I think my mom has this covered. I have enough thank you. Opening up underwear on Christmas morning with all my family there is a little awkward.
  4. BAND-AIDS – Santa, why the heck did you put Band-Aids in my stocking one year? Please do not bring me Band-Aids this year. I know I used to like them and I used to use a lot of them, but that doesn’t mean I want them as a present.
  5. ELF-ON-THE-SHELF – if you think everyone loves Elf on the Shelf, you’re crazy! I don’t need an elf messing up my house and expecting me to look around for him. That’s not my idea of fun. Plus, its face is creepy looking. I’m begging you not to put this under my tree.
  6. SOLAR ECLIPSE GLASSES – These would have been a great gift if I got these last Christmas, BUT seeing as it already happened last August and the next time I could use them for a partial solar eclipse would be on October 14, 2023 this isn’t something I really need right now. I also hope in the next 6 years someone will be able to design better looking ones. They could be a lot cooler.
  7. CLIP-ON MAN BUN – Do I really need to explain why I don’t want a clip-on man bun? Why does this thing even exist? Do people actually buy these?

That’s it! I will be a happy boy on Christmas morning if I never ever see these gifts with my name on them. You rock Santa! I know I can count on you.

Sincerely,

Finn
