My Poem’s that I wrote

Here are some of my Poem’s that I wrote from this term. I hope you like it.

Monkey Business

He’s sitting quietly

Happily eating

In the perfect spot

But I want it

He won’t move

I try

I try again

He won’t budge

That spot’s going to be mine

He won’t see it coming

No, that’s not rain

Finally! He moved

The spot is mine

The power of pee

Wins again

The Race

Long and low over hurdles

I am flying through the air

Faster than the rest

The Wind

Wind whipping through trees

Needles dancing in the breeze

Branches waving away

Inviting children to play

Whistling east to west

The wind is full of zest

A tornado of leaves arrives

To everyone’s surprise

Circling near the ground

Spinning ’round and ’round

But the wind is tired and wants to go

All worn down from head to toe

He’s beat

And needs his beauty sleep

The forest settles down

The wind has left its playground

Burrito War

Stomach growling

I’m starving

Feels like I haven’t eaten in days

I hear the oven door open

The mouth-watering smell of burritos fill the air

Dinner is ready

I pile three on my plate

Perfect!

I shovel one in my mouth and barely chew

So delicious

I want more

Four big bites and number two is gone

So is my hunger

I’m stuffed

I can barely move

Number three sits on my plate

Waiting for me

But I can’t eat another bite

Or I’m going to explode

The burrito wins

Winter Day

Snow falls on my face

My warm skin melting the flakes

My cheeks feel frozen

It’s worth it to be out here

I’d do anything for snow

And this might be my last post to have fun blogging and bye bye

Death in Space: Death by Space Craft Emergency Exit

This is the best video ever. when you watch it you’ll start laughing a lot. I choose the Second one (Death by Space Craft Emergency Exit) and here is what I rote about it.

Death in Space from Thomas Lucas on Vimeo.

After two months in space orbiting Mars, Fred and Titus were running out of things to entertain them. They had already tried bobbing for apples in zero gravity, but it was a lot harder than it looked and since they only had freeze-dried apple slices, it wasn’t as much fun as they thought it would be. They soon ran out of ideas and they were worried about wasting too much food. It’s not like they could go to the grocery store. So, they decided they would have some fun playing Truth or Dare. Fred dared Titus to prank call NASA headquarters. Titus accepted.

“Hello, Nasa Command Center. What can I do for you, Commander Small?”

“Hello there. Is your refrigerator running?”

“Yes, but I don’t understand…”

“Quick, you better go catch it!”

Titus quickly hung up and both of them laughed hysterically at the confusion he had just caused. It was all really hilarious until Nasa called back. They weren’t too happy with Titus’s decision to use the emergency telephone. Fred continued to laugh uncontrollably at his friend even though he was getting into some pretty big trouble. Titus furiously looked at Fred.

“It’s your turn,” Titus said calculatingly.

Unfortunately, Fred didn’t notice how angry Titus had become.

“Sure,” Fred responded eagerly.

Titus pulled out a package of freeze-dried jalapeños.

“Hey,” Fred said, “I thought we weren’t going to use anymore of the food for fun.”

“These are fine,” Titus replied convincingly, “These have been here since 1987. No one wants these.”

“Ok,” squeaked Fred.

“I dare you to eat the whole bag. All. At. Once.”

Fred gulped. He knew he had to do it. He slowly opened the bag and brought a corner to his mouth. All 25 jalapeños tumbled into his mouth and down his throat. Instant fire blasted through his chest. Titus smirked. Sweat poured down Fred’s face like someone had turned on a shower faucet in his spacesuit. His suit sucked up his sweat as if it was a sponge absorbing water. He couldn’t stand it anymore. He needed something to help him cool down. He looked around the room. All he could find was the Tang drink he had made earlier. Yuck. He needed something that would cool his whole body at once.

Space! He quickly traveled up to the control booth. If he could land the shuttle, he could get out into the magnificent cold air of outer space. That would work! He sat down in the pilot seat, put his helmet on and tried to navigate to the closest planet. But he couldn’t stand it anymore! His whole body felt like it was in flames. He had to get out. Now!

Without thinking, he reached for the emergency exit window and pushed it open. Suddenly, he was sucked into the Thermosphere. The cold freezing air felt wonderful to Fred. If only he had attached his safety harness before exiting the ship. The last thing Fred saw was Titus regretfully looking out from their space shuttle as they floated further and further apart.

Where I Live

Photo Credit: Fil.Al Flickr via Compfight cc

I live in the best town on Vancouver Island in British Columbia! The Comox Valley is made up of three main places: the town of Comox, the city of Courtenay, and the village of Cumberland. It has beautiful mountains that you can see from almost every direction with a giant glacier that the K’ómoks First Nation calls Queneesh, the white whale that saved their people during a flood. We also have lots of forests, beaches and rivers to explore.

There are so many places here that I enjoy, but I’ve chosen three to share with you.

1. Locals  Restaurant at the Old HouseImage result for local's comox valley
Picture from Locals website

If you ever visit the Comox Valley you should check out Locals because they make really yummy meals, which are all made from scratch. That means every time you order something, it’s made slightly different, which is neat. All of the food they use there is from local farms in the area.  That is why it’s called Locals. I’ll warn you when or if you go there, make sure you have some cash in you wallet because it is a little expensive, but remember it is super delicious. My favourite things to eat there are the cream of chicken soup and the chicken pot pie with a crust of potato slices on top. For dessert I like to choose the dipped chocolate banana popsicle.

2. Goose Spit

This is my picture

Goose Spit is one of the nearby beaches. It’s really sandy and when the tide goes out you can walk pretty far. There are also fire pits there that you can use from May to October. I love to go there and roast hot dogs and make s’more cones. What’s a s’more cone you ask? It’s a sugar cone stuffed with a layer of marshmallow, then a layer of chocolate and then another layer of marshmallow. You wrap it in tin foil and put it on the rack above the fire. Once it heats up everything inside the cone melts and you unwrap it and eat it! Yummy in my tummy! We go there when it’s sunny like a lot of people, but my favourite time to go there is when it’s raining. When it’s stormy and high tide, big waves crash into the shore and the driftwood breakwater making the water sometimes splash on to the road and your car if you’re down there and that lucky. Before the breakwater was built the driftwood logs would often end up on the road because of the windy storms. The storms are fierce there and the wind makes it hard to stay balanced sometimes. It’s so much fun. When it’s really windy, but not stormy you can also see kite surfers down there and if you kayak or canoe off the end of Goose Spit you can sometimes see orcas in the bay.

3.Oyster River

Oyster River is on the northern edge of the Comox Valley right before you get to Campbell River. It’s really fun to go swimming there in the summer. There are big potholes in the rocks that you can sit in and in one of the holes there is another littler hole on the side that you can swim through. There are also places that you can jump off into the water, but you need to be careful that you jump in a safe spot where it’s deep enough and there aren’t rocks. The water is a little chilly so it’s best when it is really hot out. There is a slow current so you can float a little ways, but parts get really shallow. It’s pretty awesome place to visit in the summer.
this is a picture that my Mom took.

It’s hard to pick only three places to share with you because this really is the best place on Earth to live. I chose these ones because I have really good memories from them and hope if you ever visit Vancouver Island and the Comox Valley you might get a chance to enjoy them too.

Harris Burdick Mysteries: Another place, Another Time

Hey, other bloggers.
this is what I have been working on in class. it is a paragraph that I wrote from this picture.

As Atticus, Billy, Archie and Elizabeth were trying to Catch up to the train because they had mist it. the tracks stretched like a snake. a storm was about to hit them, Then lighting struck like a bullet but it hit the ocean . That was so close said Atticus anxiously, Come on lets, keep going Said Billy and so the went. They couldn’t see anything in the thick gloomy fog. Then Elizabeth pointed out in the fog “there’s the train!” But when they saw the train it was on its side in the ocean. So they went on to see there grand-parents but then they saw sharks hurtling towards them.

Kindness can Change the World

Homelessness is when someone is unable to find a permanent home of their own to live in. There are different reasons why a person becomes homeless, but no one chooses to be homeless. Homelessness is everyone’s problem. Just because it may not be someone we know doesn’t mean we should ignore them. They are people in our community. If we can help we should help. If everyone did their part we could end homelessness. We just have to care enough.

Here are a few facts about homelessness that stand out for me. I think we need to understand these better to know how we can help.

  • 57% of people who are homeless are women.
    • Women who are victims of domestic violence have to escape quickly and can’t always take much with them. They might not have money to afford a place to live or food. They could be scared or hurt. We need to make sure they have places to go to that can help them get away from their situation.
    • Single moms might not have enough money to pay for daycare as well rent, food and bills. Daycare can be really expensive so it can be hard to afford it but without daycare they might not be able to work. I think there should be affordable daycare for people in poverty so it doesn’t lead to homelessness or people having to surrender their children because they can’t afford shelter.
  • 42% of people who are homeless come from an Indigenous background.
    • Generations of Indigenous people have been affected by residential schools and laws that took away their rights. This still affects people today even though many of our laws are better. There is still a lot that needs to be better. I think we need to make sure Canadians understand how Indigenous people in Canada have been treated. Every Canadian needs to learn the parts of history that have not been taught until now. Generations of non-Indigenous people were taught that Indigenous people didn’t matter and at the same time Indigenous people were taught that they didn’t matter. There’s still lots of discrimination out there towards Indigenous people because that’s what society taught even if they didn’t realize that. We need to listen and learn.
  • 13% of people are homeless because of illnesses.
    • This surprised me because I always thought you didn’t have to pay for medical care in Canada. I understand why people in the United States become homeless because it costs so much to see a doctor or be in a hospital. Are the illnesses that lead to homelessness mostly mental illnesses? Do people have to pay money here for some kinds of sickness or surgery here too? I don’t think there are enough services and help for people with mental illnesses. If people are sick in Canada they should be able to get the medical care they need.

This is a comic about homelessness that I did in class. I believe that people who are homeless deserve to be seen and not ignored. It shows you care. We can’t forget they are people too. We can’t assume we know their story. This won’t solve homelessness, but maybe if we have more compassion more people will want to help make it better.

Kindness can change the World.

Let’s talk, Santa!

Dear Santa,

How are you and Mrs. Claus? Are Rudolph and your reindeer ready to pull the sleigh? It’s probably pretty busy up there at the North Pole so I thought I’d write you a letter to save some time. I know at Christmas most people make lists for what they would like you to bring them. Well this isn’t one of them. This is a list all about what I DON’T want for Christmas. Yes, you heard me correctly, Santa. Please DO NOT bring me these gifts. I really am grateful for the presents I get from you, but you want me to like them, right?

  1. FESTIVE FRIENDS – Have you tried these? They’re disgusting. Cadbury totally tricked me into buying them thanks to the cute Christmas pictures on the box and what looks like delicious cookies. I hope they didn’t trick you too. Let me save you some trouble, Santa. Don’t ever buy them. No one will want these as a gift.
  2. BEARD-GUARD – Once you brought my dad a beard-guard. I think you were trying to be funny because lots of stuff gets stuck in my dad’s beard. I know it’s going to be a long time before I grow a beard, but please don’t ever think I want one of these. They’re really weird.
  3. UNDERWEAR – I know it’s a useful gift, but I think my mom has this covered. I have enough thank you. Opening up underwear on Christmas morning with all my family there is a little awkward.
  4. BAND-AIDS – Santa, why the heck did you put Band-Aids in my stocking one year? Please do not bring me Band-Aids this year. I know I used to like them and I used to use a lot of them, but that doesn’t mean I want them as a present.
  5. ELF-ON-THE-SHELF – if you think everyone loves Elf on the Shelf, you’re crazy! I don’t need an elf messing up my house and expecting me to look around for him. That’s not my idea of fun. Plus, its face is creepy looking. I’m begging you not to put this under my tree.
  6. SOLAR ECLIPSE GLASSES – These would have been a great gift if I got these last Christmas, BUT seeing as it already happened last August and the next time I could use them for a partial solar eclipse would be on October 14, 2023 this isn’t something I really need right now. I also hope in the next 6 years someone will be able to design better looking ones. They could be a lot cooler.
  7. CLIP-ON MAN BUN – Do I really need to explain why I don’t want a clip-on man bun? Why does this thing even exist? Do people actually buy these?

That’s it! I will be a happy boy on Christmas morning if I never ever see these gifts with my name on them. You rock Santa! I know I can count on you.

Sincerely,

Finn
